Protecting Our Environment

We are aware of the importance of taking care of our environment and the resources that it offers us; therefore, we work continuously to contribute to society.

We have therefore established Regulations for our Environment and Surroundings for the integration of environmental variables both in our installations and in the development of our products and services. We seek to promote eco-efficiency.

Always keeping in mind one of our pillars, Sustainability, we currently work on several lines of action to reduce our environmental impact. Thanks to them, we have obtained the Sustainability Certificate together with Dibaq Group, a certificate granted by CHEP for our contribution to protecting the environment and promoting a sustainable logistics model.

The lines of action we are currently working on are:

Reduction of CO2 Emissions, and Reduction of Electricity and Energy Consumption

The energy factor is key in the design of our centres and production plants. We seek to reduce our electricity and energy consumption to respect our planet more, investing in sustainable installations through various initiatives.

Firstly, we are working on the gradual replacement of traditional lighting with LED technology and the installation of self-consumption photovoltaic panels in our factories and offices.

Secondly, in our centres, we also consider the reuse of heat. Our installations have a heating system which helps to take advantage of the excess temperature in our offices. In food production processes, we have systems (such as for food drying) whose heat contribution is reused in other production stages in which a high temperature is essential.

Apart from this reduction of energy consumption, we also control atmospheric emissions. To do so, we use key measures such as the use of Liquefied Natural Gas as a fuel source in all processes, investment in production lines and vehicles which need less fuel, and the use of more sustainable vehicles.

When our engineering team designs our production centres, a holistic approach is taken, which includes the location of the installations, evaluating the distance from suppliers and the market to minimise the CO2 footprint caused by transport.

Water Reuse and Recovery Systems

A scarce asset that we are very focused on taking care of is water. Our team of engineers therefore always seeks to comply with the following aspects in centres, installations and production processes, working on:

Reducing the consumption of water thanks to a recovery and reuse system in our factories, centres and installations.

Increasing control of water used, discharging water at authorised points for reuse following purification and undertaking continuous controls to ensure that we comply with parameters which are within permitted legal limits.

Producing products with technologies which achieve less degradation of the food in the water, leading to greater availability for fish and less risk of contamination in water due to dissolved food scraps.

Environmental Commitment through Raw Materials

We work with different species of animals and strive each day to improve their wellbeing, happiness and health.

To achieve our objective, we offer a wide range of raw materials and food for animals (mainly fish, dogs and cats), adapted to their life cycle and nutritional needs. What do we want? To create natural and healthy recipes, cooked with the best ingredients.

We are aware of the importance of working with top quality raw materials, which have been selected in an environmentally sustainable and responsible way, and which offer the best benefits for animals. Therefore, we constantly control the origin and traceability of the selected ingredients.

To do so, we apply a rigorous programme to select our raw materials collaborators and suppliers. We only collaborate with those who have the animal wellbeing certification (in addition to other accreditations such as that of the Marine Stewardship Council) and visit them regularly to guarantee compliance with expected quality standards and current legislation.

Additionally, we know that the habitats surrounding us are of crucial importance, and we therefore work with sustainable crops which produce materials while always keeping tomorrow in mind. We only collaborate with those who are committed to environmentally sensible and socially responsible agriculture, who seek to obtain the best long-term results for forests, climate stability and livelihoods.

Furthermore, we believe that commitment to a local economy is another way to take care of our environment. We therefore mainly collaborate with suppliers from our nearby surroundings, with the objective of boosting the local economy and minimising the CO2 footprint caused by transport. Thanks to our logistics collaborators and their extensive experience, the raw materials selected reach our installations in the shortest time possible and in the best conditions, thereby ensuring their freshness and quality.

A Space Without Waste

We work to achieve zero waste through various initiatives. Firstly, we design installations and production processes with the objective of reducing waste in food production, minimising waste and reusing raw materials without reducing the quality of products.

We want to contribute to a cleaner world where pets can freely enjoy our parks, forests and beaches, and where fish in seas and rivers can live peacefully and safely in a habitat which is not polluted. We have therefore set a key challenge: to develop products and services which respect biodiversity in all phases of their life cycle, starting with their design and ending with their use and recycling.

Thanks to our initiatives, we have obtained the TOWARD ZERO WASTE Certification granted by AENOR, following a system of validation carried out at our facilities.

Animal Wellness

Our Team firmly believes in the following definition: “an animal is in good conditions of wellbeing if they are healthy, comfortable, well-fed, safe, able to express innate behaviours, and not suffer unpleasant sensations of pain, fear or unease”.

The Team of Derwent Group firmly believes in this definition, and therefore does everything it can to contribute to an environment where animal wellness is central. We do so in compliance with the highest level certifications and by committing to only collaborating in purchasing raw materials from suppliers compliant with the animal wellness certification (in addition to other accreditations such as that of the Marine Stewardship Council). In addition to the certification, we also periodically visit their installations to check and guarantee compliance with expected quality standards and current legislation.
