Turkey meal: how is it made, and what are its benefits?

At Derwent Trading, we work with products from a variety of manufacturers in Europe and around the world, so our customers can choose from different qualities of turkey meal to obtain a product with different percentages of protein and fat.

Turkey meal is obtained from the cooking, dehydrating and milling of slaughterhouse and cutting-plant products from turkeys fit for human consumption, from which some of the fat is usually extracted. The manufacturing process involves grinding to ensure homogeneous thermal processing, cooking to sterilise the product, and removing part of the fat prior to milling. Most producers around the world use pressure to extract this fat, so the average fat content in turkey meal (between 12 and 15%) is quite high. This is higher than that of our sources, in which the fat is extracted with more expensive organic methods that are far more natural and less harmful to the proteins contained in the meat.

Turkey meals are a key source of protein in pet food. At Derwent Trading, we recommend them for the preparation of puppy and kitten food because of their high digestibility, palatability, and low ash level.

The turkey meat used to produce these meals has excellent nutritional quality and is low in saturated fats and high in protein and essential fatty acids. It is also an important source of B vitamins, such as thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), pyridoxine (B6), niacin and folic acid. All of these substances are necessary for correct energy metabolism and the use of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. They also help the immune system to work properly. They even contain minerals, and appreciable amounts of phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, iron, zinc and selenium can be found in them.
